I
seeAsia as a beautiful collage of religions, customs, cultures,
landscapes, languages and races. My work celebrates these
diversities that I have had the privilege to experience first hand
when I travelled around India, Sri Lanka, Nepal, Thailand, Cambodia
and Laos. My eyes find beauty in the everyday objects that I
photograph, be it a tiny detail of a carving on an old shabby door or
the accidental way that shoes left on the floor form a pattern. I
tile together these photos of everyday objects and scenes in a very
methodical manner to create a stimulating picture. I describe each
piece as a ‘woven photograph’ made out of textures and colours,
often in an abstracted form, which when placed next to each other
create a whole image.
Colour
is the main focus of each piece, as it is often for me the most
inspiring, intoxicating and enriching quality of Asian life. I crave
the colourful sight of the ubiquitous sari of India, where no two are
the same, or the bright, gaudy wares of street hawkers in Thailand.
Having colourful surroundings lifts my spirits and fuels my
creativity.
I
had the walnut frames made in Bangalore, India. It involved an awful
lot of tooing and froing in autos around the city, relying on the
driver’s knowledge to take me to the appropriate commercial
quarters, so I could find the raw materials and craftsmen. They also
helped to translate my instructions to the carpenters who didn’t
speak any English. I had to postpone a flight and my travels to
wait for the frames to be finished, which then took over a year to
reach me in the UK. All that said and done, I am very pleased with
the final results and think that they compliment my work both
visually and in their authentication of my work as a truly Asian
experience.
